Replace El's Kitchen: International Comfort Food: About Me

About Me

 Hi, I'm Denell Marsh

I'm a mother, wife, educator and historian who has always had a passion for food. It's one of my first loves. It's food that really made me feel included when I was different from everyone else. It's always been my comfort. Growing up I lived in a predominately hispanic neighborhood and though the parents of many of my friends did not speak English, one thing everyone understood was food. It's a gateway to developing bonds and understandings culture.
As I grew older so did my passion for different foods. I have been fortunate enough to be invited into the kitchens of many of my friends and in turn, had the opportunity to build bonds, light fires and break bread with a diverse group of people. As a historian, I've investigated the origins of food and tracked its movements. It's astonishing how food items have been molded, altered and at times taken on a new life depending on the location. The influence globalization has had on food is phenomenal but nothing compared to how it influences people's lives.
This blog is the culmination of my experiences, my habit of eating my feelings (a forcing my friends and family to eat with me), the brain child of a history project and so much more. Much of my food inspiration comes from good times with family and friends, crazy adventures and encounters with people from all over the world. The fluidity of food proves that at the core, we are all the same. We seek friendship, love and at the end of the day we want to be comforted. The food here isn't overly extravagant or complicated. It's food that makes you feel good, or that vacation you took. It reminds you of home and good times with friends. It's a return to normalcy, solace. At least for a minute.
